A 7-year-old boy struck up an unusual friendship with his neighbor in Jackson, Tennessee. Caleb lived in the same neighborhood as Wilma Bray, a long-time resident of the area. Unfortunately, the 78-year-old was undergoing chemotherapy and radiation to battle her breast and lung cancer.
Despite her declining health, she refused to give up her independence thus her concerned neighbors would often drop up to check up on her and make sure that she was doing well. One of these loving neighbors was the first-grader who lives with his grandmother right next door.
Bray's granddaughter, Darrien Middleton, revealed that Caleb visited Wilma "four or five times a day," telling her that he does so in order to "check on her, to make sure she wakes up from all of her naps." He also made it a point to see if she needed anything or just to chat with her and keep her company. "My heart can’t take this," she added according to Yahoo! News.
"I’ve always heard her [Bray] talk about him...She just talks about how good of a kid he is and how kind he is. She gives him things here and there, she treats him like he’s her grandson," recalled Darrien. This beautiful friendship began after Bray gave the boy an extra plate of food that she had prepared.
"You would have thought Nana had given him a $100 bill. He was so grateful and thankful for a steak dinner," recalled Darrien, who met Caleb while visiting her grandmother, according to GoalCast.
"He doesn’t come from much, but you can tell he has been raised on love. He will bust out a dance move in a heartbeat, will go on and on about how much he loves school, and make you laugh until you cry. This kid deserves the love he has received from this post," wrote Darrien in an appreciation post on Facebook for Caleb.
Sadly, Bray passed away at the age of 79 but her family is glad to know that her final days were filled with love, especially from the little boy next door. "He stands out from the norm and brings so much joy into everyone’s life he is around. I am so thankful for him and the love he has shown my grandmother," continued Darrien in the Facebook post which is no longer available.
Although the two had a huge age gap, the little boy never hesitated to reach out to Bray and pop in every now and then to make sure she was okay. Darrien hopes that one day, Caleb realized just how impactful his presence has been in Bray's life. "I know for certain it has helped her on her hardest days. He will never know how much I truly appreciate him. I hope one day he realizes the impact he has left on her life and mine as well," she shared.
